Kamai hunting

Kamai is the dialect name for the Ryukyu wild boar that lives on Iriomote Island.
The traditional jump trap hunting method, which is said to have been introduced from Taiwan around 100 years ago, is still practiced on Iriomote Island today, and hunting is carried out using primitive methods such as handmade traps made from natural materials such as wood and bamboo.
The forests of Iriomote Island, where much of the natural environment remains, provide an abundance of food for the kamai, and the meat of kamai, which feed on acorns from the Okinawan oak tree and nuts from the Okinawan ziana tree, is particularly popular for its rich flavor.
In Hidate village, where I live, it is said that all the men were once kamai hunters.
This hunting culture is still deeply rooted in village life today.
